ZTE’s 50G PON Combo solution is a comprehensive strategy for upgrading fiber optic networks to 50G speeds. Its primary innovation is enabling the new 50G PON technology to coexist and work seamlessly with the existing GPON and 10G PON networks on the same fiber infrastructure.

Core Strategy: Three Generations on One Fiber

The core of ZTE’s approach is to allow GPON, 10G PON, and 50G PON technologies to operate simultaneously over a single optical fiber . This is achieved without changing the existing Optical Distribution Network (ODN)—the cables and splitters already in the ground—which protects the significant investment operators have already made and simplifies the upgrade process.

Technical Variations: Tailored to Operator Networks

ZTE has developed different “Combo” solutions to fit the two main PON technology families currently deployed by operators:

• GPON Family Solution (GPON/XGS-PON/50G PON): This three-mode combo supports the upgrade path for networks based on ITU-T standards. It was unveiled in 2023 and is a mature, field-tested solution for the majority of global networks .

• EPON Family Solution (EPON/10G-EPON/50G PON): Unveiled in June 2025, this is the world’s first three-generation time-division coexistence solution. It solves the complex technical challenge of allowing 50G PON to coexist with EPON and 10G-EPON (IEEE standards), using a unique time-division multiplexing mechanism to share the same physical channel.

Key Technology and Products

To deliver this solution, ZTE has introduced several key products and platforms:

• High-Density Line Cards: ZTE offers industry-leading port densities, including an 8-port combo card and an advanced 16-port symmetric 50G PON Combo single board introduced in early 2025 . This 16-port board uses a miniaturized SFP-DD optical module that is 30% smaller than traditional modules .

• Powerful OLT Platforms: These cards are designed to be installed in ZTE’s next-generation OLT platforms, like the ZXA10 C600H, which offers massive slot bandwidth (upgradable to 2 Tbps) and even integrates AI for smart network management and diagnostics .

• End-to-End Solution: ZTE also provides corresponding ONUs, such as the ZXEN G300-N9, which is the industry’s first symmetric 50G PON ONU and features built-in Wi-Fi 7 to deliver 50G speeds to the user’s devices.
